Life: Unmade is my brand. Not only is it the title of all my workshops and sessions, it encompasses my values, my beliefs and everything I put out into the world. Life: Unmade was born when I got real with myself, after a long period of spiraling in shame and being afraid of being “seen”. Before Life: Unmade, I was obsessed with everything appearing perfect – my life, my work, my business. I put on a front that said “I have my shit together” when in reality my life was chaos.
It wasn’t until my mentor, Yan Palmer, pointed out the difference, at the time, between my paid client work, and the photographs I was taking of my son at home, and asked what on earth was going on, that I woke up and realised what was happening. When nobody was looking, my work had a depth to it. Soul. Story. When nobody was looking I broke the rules, stretched myself creatively. Pushed my ISO above 1000! When nobody was looking, I was free to be me.
I still remember the day I “came out” to the world and said the words “I am a single mother” in a blog post. I opened myself up to judgment, I let go of the fear and shame. I decided I wasn’t going to hide behind perfect anymore. You know what happened? EVERYTHING. With that single act my entire mindset around my work, my business and my LIFE changed. The opposite of living in fear is living boldly, and that’s exactly what I started to do. The way I photographed people shifted from wanting it all to be technically perfect, to photographing from my heart. From love.
Life: Unmade was born to say to the world “I am here, I am not perfect, YOU are not perfect, but you are beautiful. Your story matters. The REAL story. The tangled, messy, honest, imperfect story. You belong. I see you.”
At the moment, I’m working on a bunch of things. At the forefront is my new business That Sounds Nice (little plug, we have a handful of seats left!), which is a workshop for photographers on branding and writing for your business, something I am SO passionate about. I love helping photographers to dig into themselves, get real and discover what it is that EXCITES them. What they want to put out into the world. To be able to take all of the elements of your photography style, your values and what you love to photograph and injecting all of that into a brand is the easiest way to stand out in this sea of sameness.
To put it simply, you get to DO YOU and you’ll attract the kind of people who love YOU, because they are connecting with your brand.
My brand, Life: Unmade isn’t just a name. It is a story of a photographer who refused to be caught up in the sea of sameness. Who refused to pretend to be perfect. Who embraced vulnerability and love.
Life: Unmade is a celebration of all that is real, crazy and wonderful in the world. An acceptance that there is no right way to do life.
The ‘Unmade’ is what made me free.
