IN HOME LIFESTYLE SESSIONS

The way that I photograph families in their homes is my point of difference. I create gut-punch images full of heart, connection, movement and life.  I celebrate spaces and the people who live and love in them.  There is something about having photographs in your home.  It's the space where you roll around on the floor with your babies, snuggle with them in bed on grey mornings, cook pancakes on the weekend and spend sunny days outside in the garden.  There are countless memories being made each and every minute, and to have photographs to remind you of this time in your lives, in your home, with your people is priceless.

Life: Unmade is so much more than a family portrait session, it's a family experience.  My clients walk away feeling so loved up, because they've just spent the most beautiful, quality, unplugged time together playing, cuddling and enjoying each other.

That's why my clients choose me and return again and again - they don't want stock standard posing and smiles and photos that don't show anything more than what they look like.  My clients walk away with a story of who they are.  Right now.   My clients demand something different. Something honest, beautiful and unforgettable.

SO I'M BOOKED IN, NOW, WHAT DO I WEAR????

This is the most common question I am asked!

Remember that your session is at home, so think bare feet, comfortable and something that reflects you and your personal style.

There should be a focus on complimentary tones, beautiful texture and simplicity so that YOU can shine in your photographs.  Try to coordinate, but avoid being too matchy-matchy (the whole fam in white shirts and blue denim is so 90's - unless you're a Kardashian).  Also try to avoid large brand names on clothing.  These images will be in your family for generations to come - so it's definitely worth putting some thought into what you might like to wear.

Clothing with textures such as linen, cotton, denim, corduroy, silk and lace always photograph beautifully.  I love to photograph muted pastels as much as I love loud brights.  All of these things will help to set the tone of your photographs - so it can be whatever you want it to be!  This is YOUR session so let your personal style shine.

In short - wear your favourite stuff (or stuff you really wanna buy), feel great and rock it!  If you feel great, that will SHINE in the photographs.

DON'T FORGET THE BEDSPREAD!   I almost always photograph my clients on the master bed, so it's worth choosing a bedspread that compliments your outfit choices.  If in doubt, go neutral!

HOT TIP: Start with you.  Choose YOUR outfit first, then choose complimenting outfits for everyone else!

Below are some suggestions of the places I personally LOVE to shop because of their patterns, colours, tones, textures and all round great photogenic vibes.  Please note: you are not required to buy a bunch of new stuff for your family photos!  This is simply a list for those really unsure - or for those who want an excuse to go shopping!!

What time will our session be?

In home sessions have a lot more flexibility for time (compared to outdoor sessions).  Because we are indoors, it leaves us open to photograph at any time of the day.  I usually schedule in-home lifestyle sessions for around 10am in the morning, or 2pm in the afternoon.

I always try to be flexible around kid nap times and your family's routine, so feel free to let me know the time of day that suits you best.  Happy babies/kids are my number one priority, so generally straight after their morning nap is a great time to begin our shoot!

HOW DO WE PREPARE OUR HOUSE?

For most people (me especially), the thought of dressing multiple small humans and keeping them clean, for any amount of time is daunting enough, but then throw in the idea that the house be clean, too? Shiiiit. Trust me, I get it.  I don't want this to be stressful for you, so here's my tips to get your home "session ready".

The main spaces I shoot in during a session are the master bedroom, the kids rooms and the main living area so these are the areas you should focus on when preparing for your session.  I always suggest tidy and decluttered, but, please don't go all Martha Stewart on me!  The important thing is not to stress. I know every house has a junk room, and it's perfectly ok to chuck it all in there - I promise I won't look. I love "lived-in" homes.  I love homes with stories and soul.  I want to see the bits and pieces that make up your everyday.  When preparing your home for our shoot, it's important that the balance that is right for you.

I specialise in HONEST photography and your home should reflect that.  I looooooove a messy bed with a snuggly family lost in the sheets.  I love a kids room with their very favourite toys scattered around the place.  Again, if you need some guidance you are more than welcome to send me through some images of your spaces for advice before your session.  Ultimately I will only shoot in the areas with the best natural light and I will explain this more once I am in your home and can assess the light.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SESSION?

I usually arrive with my camera and a (very large) coffee in hand, kick my shoes off and ask for a tour of your home.  Here we will chat, go over the details we have discussed, I'll become BFF's with your kiddos, I'll get familiar with the space, the light and I'll give you a run down of the shot list and my plan for your session.

At every session I follow the lead of the youngest kid - eg. if there is a toddler running around, they are boss for the day.  Older kids and adults tend to be a tad more flexible!  I have a loose order in which I shoot but I will change that up if I need to.

I give direction and guidance to a point, such as positioning you in the best light, asking you to look at each other, set up games and cuddles etc but mostly I am just creating a space and opportunities for connections to happen naturally.

Most sessions take around 1.5-2 hours.

WARNING:  I will sometimes move things around, I almost always climb on furniture (my 5'4 height requires it!!) and I ALWAYS ask kids to jump on the bed!

Tips for newborn sessions:

Life: Unmade newborn sessions are very different from studio/posed newborn photography.  It is more relaxed and free flowing with a focus on simplicity, connection and storytelling.  I specialise in natural, honest, lifestyle newborn photography.

  • If you want sleepy newborn photos then 6-12 days is an ideal time to book your session
  • If you want more interactive photos with your babe's personality shining, then any time up until 12 weeks is great for a newborn session
  • Have a few outfits handy for baby - we can use a few different options throughout your session including wrapped and unwrapped etc
  • I will always attempt to book your session time around the time you think baby will be most settled
  • I allow plenty of time for cuddle breaks and feeds, so we are never rushed

WHEN WILL WE RECIEVE THE PHOTOS FROM OUR SESSION?

You will get a sneak peek via email and social media within 24 hours of your session.

Within three weeks of your session, you will receive your online proofing gallery.  Here you will be able to view your images and select which ones you would like (you will either choose 50 - these are included in your initial session fee, or you can choose to upgrade to the whole gallery).  These will be sent to you as a DIGITAL DOWNLOAD.

If you are purchasing printed products, these will arrive within four weeks of the order date.

What if my toddler has his grumpy pants on and the dog is tearing the sheets off the line?

FACT: all of these things happen!  As a Mama/step mama to two four year olds and a seven year old, I get it.  I really do.  I get that families are chaotic and messy and crazy and intense.  Instead of fighting and trying to make everything appear perfect, let's get real and just embrace it.  While I always aim for a money shot (SMILLLLLLLLEEEEE) for you to send to the grandparents, my job isn't to make you all appear perfect.  It's to capture a time in your lives that's real, and sometimes that can look a little gritty.

I don't want you to look back on your images and see cheesy, forced smiles.  I want you to remember your two year old's pursed little lips, and dimply little hands on her hips when she's crazy mad about something.  I want to find the beautiful moments within the chaos and show them to you, to let you see how much there is to be grateful for.  It's my job to set the stage for real connections to happen - it's what I'm good at!  So please, don't stress about the crazy - I'm a pro!

What if we are all snotty and sick on our session date?

If you're sick, we reschedule!  No rebooking fees or any of that nonsense.  I want you all happy, bright and well for our photoshoot.  I make a point not to photograph families, particularly those with new and young babies, if I have even the slightest hint of a cold.  If I'm sick, we will also reschedule.

Will you retouch our photos/make me look skinnier/whiten my teeth?

Short answer, no.  All of my photos are professionally and carefully edited to bring out the absolute best in colour and tone.  If you would like any additional high-end editing done such as skin retouching, teeth whitening, slimming etc, this can be done at an extra, hourly rate.  All photos that you see on my website have been edited to my standard, and this is what you can expect when you receive your photos.

do you travel?

Do I travel???!!  YES. YES. YES.  In the past 12 months I have booked sessions in LA, Stockholm, London and Chicago.  I also regularly travel to Australia's capital cities for client shoots.

I service Melbourne and surrounds, however anywhere outside of Melbourne will attract travel fees.  I keep these reasonable, as I love love love to travel everywhere, but I do ask that my travel expenses are covered.  Each destination attracts different fees, so it's best to get in touch and we can work it out together!  I will happily travel to your remote Australian farm, your beach side town, your family holiday in Bali, New York to capture you in your family's Brownstone - seriously anywhere.  Please get in touch if you would like more information!

What if we want other products, such as large framed prints or albums?

You're in luck, because I am partnered with the BEST and most beautiful lab in Australia!  Once you have viewed your online gallery of images you can place further orders for printed products with your selected images.  I offer large, framed prints, wall stories (a collection of various sized framed prints), custom designed boutique layflat albumscand a range of other premium products depending on your individual needs.  Please get in touch for pricing.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I NEED TO REMEMBER?

So glad you asked. The most important thing you need to do during your session (and in life) is this:

Slow down.  Be present.  Have fun with your babies.

These photographs will serve as reminders of this time in your lives. Reminders that it's the small things that count.  Reminders to breathe in and hold the ones you love.
